How the Government’s Nutrition Guidelines Made Us Fat

 

 

Government made a big mistake with the dietary guidelines,” says Nina Teicholz, author of New York Times bestseller The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet.

“Given the track record that they have so far, you can really make a plausible argument that they’ve done more harm than good.” Consumption of meat, butter, eggs, and cheese were once encouraged as part of a healthy diet.

Then in the 1950s, a Minnesota doctor named Ancel Keys put forth his diet-heart hypothesis, claiming that saturated fats raise cholesterol levels and cause heart attacks.

Keys produced landmark studies of the relationship between diet and heart disease that transformed nutrition science.

He became a powerful figure in the science community. Contemporaries who publicly questioned the validity of his findings risked losing their research funding or becoming pariahs. When the U.S. adopted dietary guidelines in 1980, Keys’ recommendations became enshrined in national food policy.

“We have made our policy based upon this weak kind of science called epidemiology which shows association, but not causation,” Teicholz explains. “We have the situation where we just cannot reverse out of these policies that were originally based on really weak science.”

Keys’ flawed research is one reason Americans have been getting fatter and unhealthier for decades. Despite major advances in treatment, heart disease is still the leading cause of death for men and women.

“The really dominant view is that the dietary guidelines are good…and the reason America is fat and sick is that America has failed to follow them,” Teicholz says. “That’s when you start looking at the data…By every food category you can find, we have faithfully, dutifully followed the guidelines.”

Today the science behind Keys’ dietary findings is once again being challenged. Teicholz has launched the Nutrition Coalition, which aims to inform food policy with rigorous science. “Our goal is educate people about how the dietary guidelines have not been successful…and to bring this alternative policy viewpoint to policy makers,” says Teicholz. “More and more experts are willing to talk out about the science, and I think that will support change.”

My Fitness Journey Began With a Message on a Dating App

The Fat Decimator System was the best and easiest solution to my problem of sticking with a weight loss diet and finally solved my problem with obesity and singlehood. It changed my life forever.

It was a warm May day in 2017. It was a day that I’ll never forget. It was my second day in the Philippines. I had just moved into a condo in Las Pinas (a suburb of Manila). I had gotten settled in and was laying in my bed, bored.

Being bored I did what most gay men do; I went on Grindr. Not looking for anything, in particular, I was just playing around on the app when a nice young man messaged me.
We chatted on the app and then we talked on the phone.

We began to talk…
and talk…
and talk.
Before I knew it we had been talking for almost two hours!
He told me he was separated from his wife and was looking to explore his sexuality. He made it clear he wasn’t looking for a ‘hold hands in public’ type of relationship.
That was perfectly fine with me as I wasn’t ready to get serious with anyone anyway.

After talking for quite a while he asked to visit me.  We went over what we would do and what the boundaries were yadda yadda standard hookup procedure.

He arrived at my condo building gate and I said let’s get a soda first since I was thirsty. We were walking and talking and then he just stopped.

He looked at me and said

“I didn’t know you were fat. I think I’m going to pass”

Time just stopped….

I was so humiliated!

It wasn’t just that he rejected me it was the way that he rejected me that hurt so much. He might as well have pierced a knife into my heart that’s how bad it felt.

Angry and humiliated I was so ready to attack him.

I think he sensed that because he stuck out his hand to shake mine.  I was still ready to punch some respect into him but I decided that wouldn’t be a good start to my new life in the Philippines.

I shook his hand and we parted ways. When I walked into my condo it took everything I had to prevent myself from crying like a little girl…

Never Again!

Afterward, he sent me a text thanking me for my time to which I didn’t reply.  That night I told myself something that has stuck with me.

I WILL NEVER BE REJECTED ON GRINDR LIKE THAT AGAIN! 

I’ve always been a realistic person and never afraid to face the truth. I knew there were two main things going against me on Grindr or any gay app in the Philippines.

My dark skin is beautiful to me so I wasn’t going to do anything to change that but I sure as hell could lose weight! After researching I found an article that talks about how to get a decent man. It said losing weight would amongst other things help my dating woes.

I Came Up With A Plan

After researching many diet plans I figured all these plans work if you stick to them. The key is to find something you could stick to! I decided that the Fat Decimator System was the right diet for me.

Be grateful

Be thankful for the great things that you already have in your life. Try writing in a gratitude journal or just taking a few minutes before you go to bed to think of all the good things that happened to you that day.

Example: Be thankful for the relationships that you had, even though they ended. Be thankful for your friends and family who love you. This will attract even more love into your life, in the form of a soul mate.

Make a Dream board

Create a dream board. Cut out (or print out) pictures and words that represent your goal, and stick them to a cork board. Hand the board somewhere you will see it daily. This will help you visualize your dream.

Example: If you are trying to attract a soul mate, you may want to put pictures of a happy couple, of a house you will live in, of what your bedroom might look like etc. Tip: do not focus on physical characteristics of your perfect partner too much (like hair or eye color), it is more about what your lifestyle will be like and how he would make you feel.

Visualize

You can use the dream board to help you visualize your dream, but you can also do that without it. Just close your eyes and try to imagine your dream coming true, focus on the details and the feeling that you would have.

Example: Imagine going on a holiday together with your soul mate. Where will you go? What will you do? Imagine holding his hand in the airport, or lying on the beach together.

Use positive affirmations.

Choose a few positive affirmations and repeat them every day.

Example:  “Love is coming my way” or “I am in a happy relationship”.

Meditate

Meditation will help you focus and make sense of the world around you. Theta meditation is the ultimate form of meditation that will help you manifest your reality.

However, once I learned about the 5 commandments of weight loss I lost 21 pounds in 14 days! I started getting compliments at work, I started getting rejected less on grindr, and my clothes started fitting better!

That’s what gave me the motivation to keep going!

Don’t Get Romance Scammed!

Romance scammers are real but easy to detect if you follow my advice.

As more and more western nations embrace marriage equality more and more gay men are seeking love abroad.

Many gay men seek love abroad for their own reasons whether it be because they want someone younger or they just have an adventurous spirit. Any of those reasons are very good ones to broaden your horizons.

If you plan to travel or seek abroad you must protect yourself from romance scammers! In order to protect one’s self one must move with caution and make sure to keep the emotions in check.

If you plan to seek love abroad or from someone significantly younger than you then you need to understand that many of those guys are only seeking a green card and/or money.

If that means having to break someone’s heart then that’s just collateral damage to them.

There are signs you can look for to protect yourself from being scammed:

  • He wants to get you off the dating site and onto another platform such as Facebook or Skype very quickly
  • He claims feelings too soon-its not human to fall in love after one chat session. Sorry
  • He tells you a sad story and things never seem to be going his way financially
  • He tells lies but when caught in a lie seems to have a clever excuse
  • He claims to have a university education from an English speaking country but his writing is full of grammatical errors
  • He talks about wanting to move to your country right away
  • Shows you nude/sexually provocative photos of himself but doesn’t request to see any of you
  • Won’t have sex with you and tries to make you feel guilty for wanting sex-A young man making excuses to not have sex is never a good sign.
  • It just doesn’t feel right-This is the most important. If your intuition is telling you something is off about this person move on. There are way more Filipinos looking for western men than vice versa

How to Make An Inter Generational Relationship Work!

Think because you’re young and thin that you’re you’re doing him a favor by being with him? Think again. Think because you’re always flipping the bill that he should be your de-facto slave? Not so fast mister!

Real relationships aren’t about keeping  score!

They’re about respect and older/younger relationships take a certain amount of maturity from both sides in order for them to succeed. Keep reading if you want to know how to make an inter-generational relation not just survive but thrive.

The Trophy and the Sugar daddy

While there’s nothing wrong with wanting a man younger than you nor someone that has money those shouldn’t be the only reasons you are interested in an inter-generational relationship.

When I was in the Philippines I saw it all the time. An older men walking around with some young man that has zero interest in him other than his wallet or his passport.

The older man knows the boy doesn’t love him. The boy is just willing to endure the gossip and shame for the aforementioned reasons.

The older man is getting a trophy. He wants to show his friends back home pictures  with his prize. These relationships are always so sad to me as they are unhealthy for both parties.

Yes the young man is getting money but he really doesn’t want that guy on top of him every other night.

Yes the older man is getting his trophy but deep down he knows young man hates it when they are intimate. He sees his ‘partner’ making every attempt to avoid physical intimacy.

The Flower and the Butterfly

The good news is I’ve also seen true happy mature/younger relationships. The young man loves every single wrinkle on his partners face and every pound on his waist.

The mature man loves every immature joke or inexperienced life tale he hears.  No one is a trophy nor a sugar daddy.

The younger man is the flower looking to be pollinated and the older man is the butterfly  seeking a flower for nectar.  A mutually beneficial loving relationship.

The Flower/Butterfly analogy is one I like  to use because the flower needs the butterfly to spread his pollen. Without the butterfly the flower won’t be able to reproduce. The butterfly needs the flower for nourishment and sustenance without it the butterfly won’t do too well.

In other words it’s a mutually beneficial loving relationship. The butterfly would never hurt the flower nor the flower poison the butterfly.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting a younger men!

Sometimes people judge men because they desire to date younger man. There are even websites that seek to match older men with younger ones.

The reality is many of those gay men judging secretly want a young man themselves. Man no matter what sexual orientation was biologically programmed to seek youth and signs of vitality among other things.

If someone 20 years younger than you is what makes you tick then as long as he’s legal go for it!  We all have our dating preferences whether it be ethnicity, weight, height, or anything else.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting economic security!

Resources have been a factor when choosing a partner since the beginning of time. Men tend to look for signs of vitality and good health i.e. youth and women tend to look for signs of security and resources i.e. money.

Men want a woman that can give him good healthy progeny while women want a man that will stick around and provide security for her offspring.

The gay world isn’t much different.

A lot of older men look to younger men for sexual attractiveness and younger men are looking to older men for economic security. I also have another article specifically on how to keep from getting scammed. Don’t Be a Victim!

Understand that you are both equals

Sometimes gay men tend to look at inter generational relationships as unequal.

The older  might think he can control the younger because he writes the rent check every month. Sometimes the younger might think he’s doing the older a favor because he’s with that particular older guy despite all the others that are flirting with him.

Neither scenario is true.

You think because you pay the bills that he has to do whatever you say?

Think again.

He’s a human being that deserves to be treated with respect. If you don’t he’ll leave you for someone that will.

Maybe you think because you are young and thin and constantly have older men throwing themselves at you that entitles you to special treatment?

Maybe you even think “man he doesn’t know how lucky he is having me!”

If that’s the case then your partner is the most unlucky person in the world to have a guy like you sleeping next to him.  

Relationships are not favors no more than they are just about sex.

Never be with someone that thinks he’s doing you a favor by being with you!

That sounds basic but many gay men have been socialized to believe that that’s all they’re worth.

Talk about it!

In an inter-generational relationship often the expenses won’t be split 50/50 (pretty much never). Not because he doesn’t want to but because he can’t.

Realize that just because you might be paying more often than not it doesn’t mean he’s using you. If you’re unsure just take a step back and look.

Is he opening his wallet when he’s with his friends while claiming to be broke with you?

When you’re the one always paying resentment can be a natural reaction. If you feel the resentment towards your partner beginning to fester talk to him about it.

Let him know you understand he may not have much money but you’d appreciate something small like a card,a rose, or even some candy every once in awhile. It’s always the little things that count.  

Which brings me to my next point if you’re the one with lower finances there are some things you can do to make your partner not feel used.

1. Don’t suggest activities and then expect him to pay.

2. Do little things. He knew coming in that you didn’t have much money. Its not your money he wants he just wants to feel appreciated and to know you don’t feel entitled to his money because of your youth.

Embrace your differences

A personal story:

In some ways my partner and I couldn’t be more different. He’s into Ms. Universe and other ‘gay’ things while I like Adult Swim and Star Trek.

My partner will never enjoy and episode of Futurama nor will I ever enjoy watching a Ms. Universe pageant. We embrace those differences as should you.  

Understand that maybe as an older man you’ve gone through more and been at this game of life longer but that doesn’t mean he need to look down on him or treat him as ‘son’.

He wants a partner not a father!

Conversely don’t interpret advice as him trying to be your dad rather you should interpret it as him trying to prevent you from making the same mistakes he did.

Accept the bitter with the sweet

Yes you’re going to get strange looks sometimes. Yes there will be some friends telling you you can do better or that since you’re the one always paying the tab he should be a de-facto servant.

These are the things that come up in an inter-generational relationship.

On the other hand…

  • You’ll get a mature man who is secure and has your back when something happens.
  • You’ll get a man that understands a relationship is more than sex.
  • Most importantly you’ll get a man that is actually serious about wanting a relationship in the first place!

Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Put Out on the First Date

I love helping people by giving GOOD gay relationship advice and I want to help you too.  There are far too many single gay men out there which is quite ironic because there are so many single gay men out there!

If you want to know how to have a successful gay relationship the most important step is to start off right!

A hookup is just a hookup!

We both know that deep in your heart you’re tired of hooking up. At my worst I wasn’t even hooking up because I was horny I just did it because I was bored and wanted intimate contact.

Many gay guys on grindr will hookup, hoping and praying that it will turn into something real.

I read a really good article a few years back in the HuffPost about a very good looking young man that would hookup but be so disappointed when he would find out that it was just a hookup.

The reason a hookup is not a good way to get a boyfriend is because the mindset that is created is just of a hookup. If you’ve hooked up with someone he already knows your cock size, how you are in bed, and what your most intimate space (your home) looks like.

There’s simply no mystery anymore. On top of that you’ve taught him to objectify you and see you as nothing more than an object to relieve his sexual frustrations.

Just as straight guys make the mistake of trying to be a girl’s friend to get her to like him gay men (many of them) make the mistake of hooking up and hoping that it will turn into something real.

Sorry…it won’t…

Think about the last time you hooked up and the he caught feelings.

Were you so excited that finally someone physically appealing caught feelings or did you think ‘oh God dude it was just a booty call!’?

Most likely the latter!

Now think about why you felt that way.

Is it because in your mind you’ve already objectified him like a newspaper (does anyone read those anymore?) and now that you’ve gotten what you wanted you no longer have use for him?  Until your’re horny again that is…

That’s exactly how the guy you wouldn’t stop texting but wouldn’t text you back felt.

Therefore, if you want to start a real sincere relationships don’t begin with a hookup! 

When’s the right time to screw?

We’re men. So sexuality is a big part of who we are.

If you try to tell a suitor that you won’t have sex until he puts a ring on it you can count on a life of perpetual single-hood. Unless you like in an Ahmish Paradise, I guess, but even then you’d be banished for being gay.

Use your tool(s) wisely! 

Sex is one of your most powerful tools to attract and keep a man. However, lets be honest even the best sex isn’t something to base a relationship on.

Having the discipline to use your tool(s) wisely will put you 3 steps ahead of your competition!

Here’s what most guys do:

Most guys do one of two things:

  1. They give up the goodies right on the first date
  2. They try to be prudes and make him wait too long

The reason both of these tactics are wrong is because they both will cause a guy to lose interest in you.

If you give up your goodies right away and then text him incessantly the next day you’ve just marked yourself as desperate and you’ve taken out the anticipation from your relationship.
